Jacob Banks – The Boy Who Cried Freedom

The soulful rhythms of Jacob Banks continue to cause a stir. At least they do for this humble blogger. His two latest singles ‘Chainsmoking’ and ‘Unholy War’ are pieces of songwriting heaven. The latter has a distinct air of Paolo Nutini’s Caustic Love while retaining Banks’ individual quality. He genre hops from soul to R&B and then onto blues and back again. Along the way, he fuses classic arrangements with modern production, most noticeably on ‘Mercy’. The song displays a fusion of distorted guitar riffs and organ vibrato which are both run through filters and accompanied by quirky effects, samples and Banks’ powerful vocal.

The result? A veritable treat for the ears and the soul.
