The fifth album by ‘Panic! At the Disco’ might well be branded a solo album. Brandon Urie takes the helm as the only remaining member of the Las Vegas rock band. Never to waste time in repeating what has come before and embracing creative freedom, does this new album live up to previous successful efforts from the Sin City soloist?
Whether it is the electronic elements of title-track ‘Death of a Bachelor’ or the swing-infused and self-descriptive ‘Crazy=Genius’ I am sure there is something here to please fans old and new.
To begin with there is some fantastic guitar work here – particularly in openers ‘Victorious’ and ‘Don’t Threaten Me with a Good Time’. The latter does take the riff from the B-52s’ ‘Rock Lobster’ but we’ll gloss over that. The rock vibe is consistent throughout as you would expect but it is blended with other elements that make for engaging listening. Whether it is the electronic elements of title-track ‘Death of a Bachelor’ or the swing-infused and self-descriptive ‘Crazy=Genius’ I am sure there is something here to please fans old and new.
Described as “a mix between Sinatra and Queen” by Urie himself, the album certainly offers something bit different with each track, but to mention such revered artists in a description is a bold statement. I suppose Urie does manage to channel a slight air of Sinatra in ‘Crazy=Genius’ and the final track ‘Impossible Year’ but that’s as far as it goes. As for Queen, there are certain elements that support this, particularly on ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’.
To call this a complete solo effort would be erroneous. There are a wealth of talented additional musicians and producers on this record and that help make it what it is; a great rock album to open 2016!
