You know when you hear a song and think “That’s more like it!”? Well, that’s exactly what went through my mind upon hearing Royal Blood’s new single. ‘Lights Out’ was a case of normal service is resumed whereas ‘Hook, Line & Sinker’ left me feeling underwhelmed. There’s no chance of that here. The main distorted riff of ‘I Only Lie When I Love You’ is a perfect example of Mike Kerr’s versatility as a bass-playing songwriter. It’s not fancy, or particularly complicated, but it’s fat, gritty and it gets the job done with simple precision. With only a week to go until their new album ‘How Did We Get So Dark?’ drops, this dose of anticipation is just what the doctor ordered.
