S.P.Y. – Alone In the Dark: EP 3

Hospital heavyweight S.P.Y has released the third instalment of his Alone In The Dark trilogy and it’s as sinister as the title suggests. Representing the darker side of drum ‘n’ bass, S.P.Y incorporates edgy percussion with dirty industrial synth work and foreboding atmospheres. With ‘Transmission’ and ‘Lockdown’ the bass, synths and risers are the stars of the show. Whereas ‘Hardcore Harry’ and ‘Dominator Mode’ are percussive monsters with the latter seemingly created as a dystopian version of Stomp. ‘Dreaming’ acts as the EP’s balancing anchor, injecting some melodic piano and warm bass which shows the talented producer can still deliver more uplifting productions.

It’s a well-crafted conclusion to the trilogy, but if I were to condense the series into a 10-track album I would choose the tracks at the bottom of this review.
