The Allergies – As We Do Our Thing

Hailing from Bristol on a journey of infectious breaks, The Allergies are an exciting duo made up of Rackabeat (Chai Wallahs) and DJ Moneyshot (Solid Steel). Aiming to take vintage sounds and reshape them for the modern dance floor, their debut album ‘As We Do Our Thing’ sees them embrace their mantra and show their flare for innovative yet nostalgic productions.

The ‘Intro’ has an air of DJ Shadow’s ‘Entroducing’ about it, but this soon fades away as we ‘Blast Off’ with Ugly Duckling’s Andy Cooper. This is a perfect track to introduce listeners to what The Allergies do best – intricately weaving beats and various sampled instruments and combining it with an equally driving rap vocal. Title track ‘As We Do Our Thing’ then continues in a jazzy funk vibe that is sure to get you dancing. Guitars and brass with supportive bass and a shuffling beat feel like just what the doctor ordered given what this track does for your mood.

The interspersion of tracks relying on their layered sampled instruments rather than those with a full vocal leaves nothing to be desired.

This pattern of full vocal, then part-sampled vocal strikes a balance with the album’s flow. Hypeman Sage, Blu Rum 13 and Andy Cooper all add their respective vocal flavours to ‘Sound Advice’, ‘Flip the Scripture’ and ‘Rock Rock’. The latter sees some very impressive rhyme-spitting from Cooper, while the distorted guitar sample of ‘Flip the Scripture’ gives Blu Rum 13’s appearance an added element of contrast.

The interspersion of tracks relying on their layered sampled instruments rather than those with a full vocal leaves nothing to be desired. ‘Special People’ is a particular highlight, but I also love the interludes of ‘Real Thing’ and ‘Infinito’ – both serve as good breathers and setups for their following tracks with the latter being the precursor to the jazzy hit ‘God Walked Down’.

A seriously impressive album from these hip-hop/funk masters.
