Durham quartet The Retrobutes are a prime example that rock ‘n’ roll and guitar music are alive and well. Their debut EP, The Show Must Go Wrong is a four-track powerhouse with a classic rock vibe. Johnny Baul and Josh Pringle harmonise wonderfully on ‘I Will Never Die’ where we are also treated to solo flourishes from bassist Jack Brown and drummer Alice Gent respectively. You can hear the influences of The Beatles, The Stones, The Jam, The Who throughout the EP. They also keep the experience fresh and engaging from the punk edge of ‘These Days’ to the slow summertime jam of ‘Rolling Stone’. Adding the cynical and rebellious lyrics into the mix they complete the trip down memory lane with effortless flair while simultaneously judging the modern world for all its flaws. A promising first outing for the young band.
